Bullets that hit Kupwara cop, pierced many

Srinagar/Kupwara: The family of slain cop, Mohammad Yousuf Bagad, son of Shah Mohammad of Kachama Harri area of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district who was killed in Halmatpora encounter Thursday alleged that their beloved was ‘ill-treated’ by the department.

Bagad who has left behind his wife and five children including two daughters was serving the Police department from the past 18 years.

“The slain cop left his wife Reshma, three sons Iqbal Ahmad, Shabir Ahmad and Irshad Ahmad and two daughters Shokeena and Nusrat,” said one of his relative.

The family said that Yousuf one was never promoted by the department despite serving it for almost 18 years.

He was the first matriculate among the Schedule Tribe (ST) community in the area, the family said.

“Educated people are getting promotions but we fail to understand the system of police department as their beloved one was not promoted since he joined his duties,” they said.

The relatives in a brief chat with ‘Kashmir Vision’ said that the slain cop has been facing tough times since his childhood.

“He joined police department after his family was facing tremendous hardships as his father was a labourer and couldn’t manage to earn sufficient livelihood,” they said, adding that despite being financially poor, Bagad struggled to invest huge amount towards arranging for the fee of his child who has joined an engineering college.

The relatives further said that the Bagad’s home was also burnt some two year ago, which added to the woes of the family.

They said that the slain cop was a respectful person who showed respect to one and all.

Besides, Bagad, one more policeman and three Army troopers were killed in the encounter that raged between forces and militants in Halmatpora area of north Kashmir’s

Kupwara district on Tuesday and continued till Thursday.

The family also appealed the Union government to restore peace in the Valley so that the ongoing bloodshed of Kashmiris would come to an end.

Meanwhile, as soon as the body of the slain cop reached his native village, emotional scenes were witnessed in the area.

Amid tears, sobs, hundreds of people from Kachama Harri village and its adjacent villages reached the residence of slain cop and participated in his funeral prayers.

The slain cop was later buried at his ancestral graveyard in the area.
